Why do we do it?

Got a a bad review on my first book. Despite knowing that it’s just from one person who “didn’t get it”. It does bring me down quite a bit. It makes me wonder why I bother writing, or at least why I don’t just burn everything I write and keep it as a personal hobby. What is it that I’m hoping to get out of sharing the work with other people?
On one level, yes, I would like to make my hobby into a job. So cash would be nice. But I think it’s more than that. Is it an ego trip? If it is then it’s certainly not working. Why waste my time? Maybe it would be better just to focus my energy on getting drunk and staring mindlessly at the TV.

  1. Maybe you do it for some sort of sense of validation? You've no way of knowing if people read it and took something good away from it either unless they post a review.

For me id like to think that anything i get published might make someone, somewhere think about something differently or learn something about themselves or even just relate to a character or story. Hoping that someone has that sort of experience reading/watching/playing any of my work i think is why im doing. Plus i like it and yes want cash for doing it.

Not sure if this helps as its probably a lot tougher for writers to make it into the money.

  2. I know what you mean. The negativity just gets a bit wearing after a time.
